For Dr. Bradley Babits, a general dentist at Dental Depot Arizona’s new Mesa location, becoming a dentist was about more than taking care of teeth; it was about taking care of people. Dr. Babits saw just how important those personal relationships are while he watched his father serve the Valley and Phoenix Metro areas for more than 30 years at his dental practice. Dr. Babits went to work for his father during his senior year of high school to make some extra money for college, and what started out as a transition job soon became the pathway to a new passion.
“I was always using my hands to build things,” explains Dr. Babits. “Building models, working with my hands, and I was looking for a way to incorporate that into a career where I could also help people.”
The proverbial light came on for Dr. Babits when he got a chance to observe his father working with patients.
In addition to providing good dental care, “he was able to build relationships with his patients and leave a positive impact on them,” Dr. Babits says. “That’s when it really hit me that this was something I’d want to do.”
Born and raised in Arizona, Dr. Babits attended college at the University of Arizona and is a recent graduate of the dental school at Midwestern University College of Dental Medicine-Glendale. Dr. Babits briefly considered starting his own practice, like his father, but was drawn to the experiences, challenges, and opportunities Dental Depot offers young dental professionals.
Dental Depot’s mentorship program is among the best in the country, allowing dental professionals access to senior doctors and the “clinical pearls of wisdom” they’ve learned over the years. Senior doctors visit the offices once a week to review cases, shadow younger doctors, and offer experienced advice and pointers. What’s more, these mentors serve as valuable developmental resources 24/7.
“There’s always someone available to call or talk to, even if they’re not around.”
Also, unlike smaller private and general dentistry practices, which may specialize in certain treatments and completely omit others or that may not have any specialists on staff, Dental Depot provides new dentists the opportunity to do all dental procedures, bolstered by a supportive team of specialists and state-of-the-art technology and equipment.
“They push you more than you would be in a private practice,” says Dr. Babits. “I’ve grown so much in this past year alone, gaining experience I never would have received in another setting.”
This is especially important, says Dr. Babits, for young dentists.
“As a dentist coming out of school, newly graduated students often shy away from challenging procedures like root canal therapy, complex cases , and surgical extractions,” Dr. Babits explains.
At Dental Depot, however, new dentists have the resources, constant mentoring, and regular continuing education they need to dive into those types of treatments with more confidence.
“They [Dental Depot] will never force you into something you aren’t comfortable with,” Dr. Babits says. But the environment Dental Depot creates makes taking on those tough cases “more manageable and less worrisome, so you aren’t so afraid of doing it.”
While Dr. Babits is a trained general dentist, he most enjoys the complexities of restorative dentistry. Procedures like crowns, bridges, and fillings are highly technique-sensitive and require exceptionally refined motor skills, and Dr. Babits is up for the task.
“I really enjoy the challenge,” he says. “Seeing the results and seeing patients reap the benefits of those results makes it all worth it.”
The results Dr. Babits sees in his patients are the most gratifying part of his job, he says.
“When we’re relieving a patient’s pain, or we’re improving oral care, we’re improving their smile, but we’re also improving their life and their happiness.”
Although Dental Depot offers its doctors broad paths to future growth in the company, Dr. Babits is content to just learn, soaking in all of the experience, guidance, and wisdom Dental Depot places at his fingertips.
“Working for Dental Depot allows you to focus on the clinical aspects of dentistry without having to worry about the business side,” Dr. Babits says. “As a new grad, in my first year of practice, this is exactly what I need right now, a safe place to learn new skills and hone my training.”
