Most children start to lose baby teeth around age 6, a process that continues until around age 12, when all adult teeth have erupted. However, how these adult teeth come in matters to the future health of your child.

The American Association of Orthodontics recommends that children first visit the orthodontist by age seven, but for kids with jaw-growth or tooth problems, the first visit may need to be as early as age five or six. Even if treatment does not begin at this time, it’s good to start making a plan or adjust behaviors. Your child may need an orthodontic exam if any of the following issues occur:
Introducing braces early helps move your child’s bones while they are still growing and expands the jaw to make more room for incoming permanent teeth. Better yet, taking care of teeth at home is easier and more effective when teeth are properly aligned. This reduces the risk of tooth decay and gum disease which, if left untreated, can eventually lead to more serious overall health issues. Orthodontic care also provides a more solid foundation for biting and chewing. When an improper bite is not corrected, speech and/or chewing difficulties can occur, including increased wear on tooth enamel and jaw problems. Of course, straight teeth and a beaming smile are a benefit everyone enjoys.
We know not all kids look forward to braces. We do our best to make the process fun, and we offer choices in orthodontic treatment that allow our patients to find a solution that works best for them and their needs. In addition to traditional braces, we also offer silver Damon brackets, and more discreet options, including clear Damon brackets and Invisalign, which are clear, custom-made aligners that gradually move teeth into position based on the patient’s customized treatment plan. No matter if your child or teen opts for invisible bands or wants to make a statement with a pop of color, we’ve got them covered. Moreover, at Dental Depot, we care for our patients through all stages of their lives. And if they need orthodontic treatment, we can easily accommodate these treatments right along with routine dental checkups and cleanings.
